A very special project to start the year – part 3

alison hutchinson logoThe final phase of the redecoration project in conjunction with Alison Hutchinson Design at Frieston is now complete.

The wallpaper design chosen by Alison is from the Little Green London Wallpapers II collection in association with English Heritage.

Lansdowne Walk - plum

The wallpaper Lansdowne Walk in plum features an Arts & Crafts motif in the manner of Voysey, a leading light of the movement who was perhaps more famous as an architect than as a wallpaper designer.

Beautiful rich plum tones

The rich plums and reds of the design work so well against the stone pale warm eggshell. This Little Greene wallpaper design dates to around 1910 and compliments the deep rich red tones of the antique furniture but the room still feels like it can be used and enjoyed in the 21st century.

For me as a decorator my enjoyment comes from looking at this design and planning how this wallpaper should be hung. My skill lies observing the character of the room and planning ahead. Buildings of this age are never going to be square and this room was no exception.

The secret lies in planning ahead

The chimney breast offered the biggest challenge. Normal practice would dictate that the central line should be established here as this is where your eye line would naturally fall as you entered the room. Observing the design of the wallpaper and calculating where the joins would fall I chose to offset the centre line and therefore achieve the smooth lay I needed around the quirky angles of the chimney breast.

Working with wallpaper is like starting a new relationship

Working with wallpaper is like starting a new relationship, you have to get to know your paper and understand its personality.

The quality of Little Greene wallpaper makes this process a joy but every paper is different and that’s what I love about my work.

The final finishing touches to this room are still to arrive and I will be going back to see the full finished room at the end of February.

I have just started a new project where I will be hanging a Farrow and Ball wallpaper so my addiction to wallpaper continues.
